A Word from 1 Peter 5

Who's in your flock? I know that probably sounds like an odd question to ask on a Monday morning. And yet, no matter who you are -- and no matter what position(s) you do or don't occupy -- I'm fairly certain that you've got a flock! It might be family or friends. It might be employees or coworkers. It might be people in whose lives you don't think you have much influence. And yet, I can almost guarantee that there are people who depend on you, who need your guidance and encouragement, and who -- even if they hardly know you -- can be influenced by you in a way that blesses their lives.

Of course, having said that, you might wonder why I'd bring up the issue of your flock. And the reason has to do with today's word from 1st Peter Chapter 5. Now, I'll admit: in context, this is a word addressed to church leaders. But I really do think it applies to all the situations in which we have a chance to influence people for good. Because the scripture says:

Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.  (1 Pet. 5:2-4; NLT)

You see, every day, we've got the opportunity to guide, and bless, and encourage, and care for somebody. And the more we "shepherd faithfully" the relationships of which we're a part, the more likely it is that all the members of God's flock will find their way safely into the fold.

So would you tend your flock today, no matter how small it might be? And would you trust that your care for others can lead them to the Great Shepherd who longs for them to thrive? Amen.
